The Event

A weekend of English Country Dance to suit all tastes, with dances from the period c1650 to the present day including New England Contras and Squares.

The Leaders - John & Hilary Turner

The series is organised and led by John & Hilary Turner. It is aimed at enthusiasts who enjoy their dancing and aspire to improve their skills, knowledge and understanding of English Country Dance, but not at the expense of courtesy and cordiality.

On this occasion the calling was shared between John and our 'Guest' Caller Philippe Callens with music provided by Dan & Caroline Hollingsworth (Folkus Pocus).

John, a Yorkshireman, calls dances in a variety of styles from 'Playford' to 'New England' Contras & Running Set. He has called at several major UK festivals, and at dance camps in the USA in recent years. John's 'Calling CV'.

Hilary, originally from the North-East, is Booking Secretary and Hostess.

The weekend commenced with dinner on the Friday evening and ended with a farewell dance on the Sunday afternoon. There was a mixture of dances & workshops, and some free time to explore Bournemouth & the beautiful environs.

Guest Caller - Philippe Callens

Philippe is known internationally as a leader of English country dance and also of square and contra dance. He started dancing in 1975 in Antwerp, Belgium, and has been teaching for over 25 years now. In that period he has steadily gained a reputation as a leader who can easily combine high quality dancing with the dancers’ personal enjoyment.
Philippe has called in many European Countries and around the world. In the UK he has appeared at Eastbourne and Southam festivals, and has led weekends at Bournemouth, Casterton and Symonds Yat.
Other interests include dance history and reconstruction, leaders training, and publishing. Philippe’s latest book of dances ‘Antwerp Antics’ was published in 2004.

Guest Musicians - Folkus Pocus (Dan & Caroline Hollingshurst).

Dan & Caroline have been playing music together since they met whilst studying Music at Cardiff University. Caroline, well known as the fiddler with Stradivarious & ceilidh band Scotch Mist, spends much of her time running music projects & workshops for young people. Dan, a pianist, conductor, trumpeter & composer is in demand as a freelance musician and workshop leader, as well as making regular appearances at festivals.
Together Dan & Caroline were finalists in the 2002 Hertfordshire Folk Association’s ‘New Roots’ competition. As ‘Folkus Pocus’ they have played for a regular series of dance workshops at Cecil Sharp House and at dances, dance weekends and festivals around the UK, Holland and Germany.
